Development Director

We are currently seeking a Development Director to plan, implement and manage all aspects of fundraising strategy and relationships to support our vision of a community working together for literacy that empowers all individuals to achieve their full potential.

An ideal candidate is a person who is personable, organized, flexible, adept at independently handling multiple priorities with good follow-through, and passionate about making reading possible in West Michigan.

This position requires consistent interaction with the SLD Read donors, community partners, including foundations and event sponsors, and our dynamic leadership team. Responsibilities will include planning, implementing and managing all aspects of SLD Read’s fund development plan. SLD Read has a strong history of stewardship and responsibility in our communities and the Development Director will be responsible for continuing that practice with integrity, initiative, and standards set forth in all local, state and federal laws regarding donations and policies related to operating as a 501(c)3.

A B.A. in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or equivalent with a strong portfolio including an emphasis on special event planning are preferred.

Become a Tutor

Tutoring is the backbone of the SLD Read mission. We currently have over 75 tutors in 14 West Michigan counties and requests for our services are increasing every day. If you are interested in part-time employment and want to make reading possible, consider becoming an SLD Read Tutor!

Tutor Training

Phonics Fundamentals © for Tutors is the base of our training options and is a beginning level training course in the Orton-Gillingham method.  Phonics Fundamentals © for Tutors is offered at both of our office locations multiple times throughout the year. Enrollment in the training course requires an interview and is dependent upon course availability.

 Tutor Qualifications

  • Potential tutors for SLD Read have a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent), background clearance through the Michigan State Police and Department of Human Services, and have successfully completed SLD Read’s Phonics Fundamentals © training course. After training, potential tutors complete an internship with an SLD Read Master Tutor before he/she is placed independently with students. Continuing education of tutors is implemented through additional training classes, required monthly in-service meetings, and local professional conferences.
