Become a Tutor

Tutoring is the backbone of the SLD Read mission. We currently have over 145 tutors in 18 West Michigan counties and requests for our services are increasing every day. If you are interested in part-time employment or to volunteer and want to make reading possible, consider becoming an SLD Read Tutor!

Tutor Qualifications

Potential tutors for SLD Read have a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent), background clearance through the Michigan State Police and Department of Human Services, and have successfully completed SLD Read’s Phonics Fundamentals © training course. After training, potential tutors complete an internship with an SLD Read Master Tutor before being placed independently with students. Continuing education of tutors is implemented through additional training classes, required monthly in-service meetings, webinars, and local and virtual professional conferences.

Tutor Training

Phonics Fundamentals© for Tutors is the base of our training options and is a beginning level training course in the Orton-Gillingham approach. Phonics Fundamentals© for Tutors is offered at our office locations and online multiple times throughout the year. Enrollment in the training course requires an interview and is dependent upon course availability. Read more about Phonics Fundamentals for Tutors!
