Welcome Mary Outinen and Molly Barrett
Mary joined us in June as the Curriculum and Instruction Manager for Kalamazoo. Mary has over 30 years of classroom teaching at the elementary level. She retired from Parchment Public Schools and has a Master’s degree in Reading from Western Michigan University. When Mary was asked why she was passionate about SLD Read, she responded “I believe in the SLD mission and the Orton-Gillingham program. It is exciting to know it is helping so many people. I also love how long many tutors have been tutoring children. This is a great testimony to the program!”
Here at SLD Read we always want to know what book made you fall in love with reading as a child. Mary’s favorite book as a child was “”A Fly Went By“. Her mom would read and re-read it to her many times! When Mary could read by herself, her favorite book was: “The Secret Garden“.
On the weekends, you will find Mary tinkering in her garden, at the beach, at the market or sitting out on her patio.
Molly Barrett started at SLD Read the last week of July. She has taught for 21 years (15 as an elementary teacher and 6 as an instructor at Michigan State University in Elementary Methods). Molly has an MA in Art of Education from Aquinas College.
Molly is excited for the opportunity to work closely with a curriculum that can make such a difference in the lives of all children. “I am pleased to see that SLD Read’s mission advocates for a partnership between educators and the community,” said Molly. “SLD’s program draws from the knowledge of a variety of stakeholders creating a robust educational experience for our students.”
In elementary school, she loved the shared experience of reading. Molly can remember sitting with her mom and sister reading books from her school’s “Battle of the Books” list.
On the weekends Molly loves to spend time with her husband and three dogs.
