Meet Our Tutors, Hear Their Stories
Our tutors work tirelessly to encourage, teach, and engage their students. Learn more about them and their journeys to SLD Read here.
Meet Alma
During Alma’s second year as a literacy tutor for Battle Creek Public Schools (BCPS), her boss asked her to do something new. SLD Read was coming to BCPS, and Alma was to be trained to tutor with its curriculum.
Meet George
SLD Read tutor George White has a long history with literacy – from earning his GED, to advocating for his son in school, to working at the Kalamazoo State Hospital, White has spent his entire life emphasizing the importance of reading, writing and spelling to those around him. It only made sense that his advocacy would lead him to tutoring children with learning disabilities, like dyslexia, at SLD Read.
Meet Karen
When SLD Read tutor Karen Hassler was introduced to new student Thomas, she was in awe of the bright, kinetic energy she was met with. At 8 years old, Thomas was buzzing with an untapped excitement for reading and literacy.
Meet Sandy
Love is a big part of Sandy Williams’ life. Williams finds love everywhere she goes, whether it be within her job or her passion for learning. A part of this deep affection that Williams fosters is a love for people – and that is what led her to SLD Read.
Meet Marilynn
Marilynn Johnson loves using her imagination to find order. She finds joy in organizing and planning, all while engaging her brain. “Structure and creativity,” says Johnson. “I love when those two things work together.”
Meet Ron
The last thing Ron Strzelecki expected upon retiring from his career in manufacturing sales was finding a love for tutoring at SLD Read – but the opportunity ended up being a full circle moment for him.
