Our vision is communities working together to empower all people with learning disabilities, like dyslexia, to develop lifelong language skills. All of this work is so that we may realize equitable, accessible communities in which every member has the tools to achieve their full potential.
What is the need?
Did you know that each year, over 1 million 4th graders are added to the list of people who are unable to read in the U.S? And that 1 in 6 students who are not reading proficiently in third grade fail to graduate from high school on time? It is statistics like these that SLD Read is trying to change.
What do we do?
Offering 1:1 tutoring with students who struggle with reading, writing, and spelling, SLD Read is an organization that focuses on strengthening communities through literacy. In the 2023-24 school year, SLD Read assisted 113 students through its site based intervention in the form of tutoring. This adds up to 3,285 hours worth of time spent with students. Districts served include Kalamazoo Public Schools, Battle Creek Public Schools, and Grand Rapids Public Schools.
