Tips for a successful Back to School:

  1. Be patient and understanding – change can be difficult whether it is changing from a summer    schedule to changing to a new building and having to make new friends.
  2. Be understanding – things may not always go the way they were planned and that’s ok.
  3. Be sure to set up a schedule for after school activities, gathering school supplies/homework at night, getting clothes out for the next day, bedtime, and waking up.
  4. Encourage your child to eat a well-balanced breakfast, as well as lunch. Provide a snack and water bottle for the long day at school.
  5. Be active in your child’s academic life – provide homework support, check grades online, attend parent/teacher conferences to know how your child is progressing, and check in daily with your child about how they are feeling about school and friends.
  6. Encourage your child to read or to listen to books in a digital format and to keep a journal for “fun”. This allows them to practice their reading, spelling, and grammar skills.

On July 25, 2023, Grand Rapids Kids published a feature article all about SLD Read.

The article, written by Elizabeth Rudd, reports SLD Read’s ability to build confidence and literacy skills in students aged six to ten through 1:1 tutoring two hours a week. SLD Read aims to target literacy intervention when kids are still “learning to read” rather than… read the rest.

On June 14, 2023, the Big Rapids Pioneer published a story about the donation that SLD Read recently received from a local nonprofit organization.

According to the Pioneer, Lori Weller, SLD Read’s Education Services Coordinator, met with Kendra Prudhomme Smith, 100 Women Who Care Member, on June 9 to accept the $5,350 donation.

Prudhomme Smith explained to the press the organization’s decision to donate:

“SLD Read plays a crucial role in raising community awareness and understanding of literacy issues, ensuring that everyone has access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive…This funding will undoubtedly make a lasting difference in the lives of those who struggle with learning disabilities, providing them with the necessary tools and support to overcome challenges and succeed.”

Indeed, this donation will be invested directly into our mission to strengthen communities through literacy. Thank you again to 100 Women Who Give of Mecosta County.
