Abbie's Story

Abbie’s story started at 7 years old; diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD, Abbie was working hard to keep up with her peers at school. She was great at math but her reading and spelling skills were falling behind everyone else.

Abbie wanted to read chapter books like her friends and be able to read aloud in class, but she lacked the skills and confidence to try. Abbie’s parents contacted SLD Read to get the support she needed to reach her goals.

Abbie is a hard worker; she and her tutor, Lisa, got down to business, focusing on building foundational skills and moving on to more complex concepts at each lesson. Together, they worked to build Abbie’s literacy toolbox that will serve her throughout her life. Emily, Abbie’s mom, told us, “Abbie’s dyslexia has not slowed her down one bit! She is right where she should be academically, and more importantly, she was just recognized by her teacher when she VOLUNTEERED to read aloud in class!”

Unfortunately, Abbie’s story is not unique. It is estimated that 1 in 5 people experience the same struggles as Abbie. Without interventions like SLD Read, these students are often left behind, never fully participating in the educational experience which can lead to low high school graduation rates, poor health outcomes and high unemployment rates. With each student served by SLD Read tutors, we are proud to be strengthening community through literacy.
