Elizabeth's Story

A Kalamazoo Public Schools student’s journey began where many young readers’ stories start: diagnosed with dyslexia at eight years old, Elizabeth struggled with literacy.

The signs were all there – difficulty with word recall, memory challenges, and inconsistent comprehension levels. Upon diagnosis, Elizabeth’s mom knew she needed help. It just so happened that SLD Read had recently sent a tutor to begin working with students at a certain Kalamazoo Public Schools elementary school, which is where Elizabeth attended fourth grade. A tutor, Becky, began working with her shortly thereafter.

The difference in Elizabeth once the lessons began was stark and inspiring.

“Becky showed amazing patience,” Elizabeth’s parent wrote in a letter to SLD Read. “And the hard work paid off.”

From being diagnosed with dyslexia, to the day she graduated high school, Elizabeth had gone from struggling with literacy to succeeding in honors courses in middle and high school. She was in honors English, and many AP courses.

“Without the lessons from SLD, she never could have accomplished completing these classes,” Elizabeth’s parent wrote. “And more importantly, developing a love of reading.”

Having graduated high school in late May, Elizabeth is now entering the world with the tools she needs to succeed. Her parent wrote, “She is a confident young woman ready to start the next chapter.”

Elizabeth’s literacy skills are taking her all the way to college, where she intends on earning an associates degree at a community college, and later, a bachelor’s degree at a university.

“I cannot thank you enough for helping Elizabeth,” Her parent wrote.

SLD Read could not be prouder of Elizabeth and all she plans to do in life.
